Original Oil Paintings by wade powell

As a young boy, I was fascinated with the art of Charles Beckendorf, and would sit and draw from Beckendorf pen & inks that my grandmother had hanging on her wall. When I was about ten years old I had the opportunity to meet Charles Beckendorf and eat turkey jerky with him and watch him paint. This was the first time I had really seen an original painting. Later, when my mother was diagnosed with leukemia, I began oil painting scenes of the Texas Hill Country as I sat by her bedside. It gave me something to do as she would drift in and out of sleep. As my young family grew, I put the paints away for over ten years until 2011 when the small country church I was serving asked me to paint a scene of the church to be auctioned off to help pay for the purchase of a new fellowship hall. The painting did quite well at auction, and numerous requests came for prints of the painting. I've painted several other churches since then as well as scenes of particular interest to me or requests and commissions that others have made.  If you are interested in one of the paintings below or would like to inquire about a commissioned piece, please send an email to powellartsales@gmail.com.

Leon Creek Cliffs 11x14

$720 framed

I came across a photo on Facebook posted by a realtor friend who had this property listed for sale.  The cliffs struck me as something fun to paint with the summer sky reflected in the water. I look at this scene and think about all the trouble I could've gotten into as a kid... and as an adult I think about how peaceful it would be sitting in a lawn chair in the

Longhorn Neighbor 16x24

SOLD

This Longhorn Cow lives on the ranch next door. This is one of my favorites.  Maybe because I know how fun and frustrating it was to paint.  I love it when I get frustrated and almost give up just before having a break through where things seem to fall into place. Prints are available at https://fineartamerica.com/featured/hilda-longhorn-wade-powell.htmlhttps://fineartam

Perkins Chapel at Southern Methodist University (SMU) 20x24

$1,450 framed

When I was in seminary at Asbury Theological Seminary I painted the chapel at Asbury in return for my final semester of tuition.  So, as I contemplated continuing my education with a doctorate, SMU was on my list of places to apply.  I painted the chapel "just in case" we could work out a similar deal. Ultimately, I chose  Duk

Daddy's Cotton 18x22

I grew up on a cotton farm. My dad comes from a farming family.  When I was a kid, my dad bought me a 410 gauge shotgun for picking several rows of cotton by hand that weren't accessible to the cotton stripper. I painted this for him in December 2019.  The original isn't available, but prints can be ordered at https://fineartamerica.com/featured/daddys-cotton-wade-powell.ht

Mitch 22x28

$1,640 framed

Mitch was a calf that was given to my kids when I was the pastor of a small country church.  Mitch's mother had died and the rancher thought my kids would benefit from bottle feeding and raising Mitch. He was named after a priest we enjoyed watching on TV, Fr. Mitch Pacwa, and the 1st baseman for the Texas Rangers at the time, Mitch Moreland. Fun fact... Mitch was painted i

Beaver Creek Rapids 16x20

$1,280 framed

There is a spot on our place in Mason County that has always been special to me.  The big rock on the right was home to an endless supply of perch to catch with a cane pole.  I fished there as a kid, and when my kids were young they did the same.  Just beyond the big rock, the creek could carry a tuber through a granite maze that would eventually drop you abou

St. Mary's - Fredericksburg TX 16x20

SOLD

My wife and I had our rehearsal dinner at the restaurant just behind St. Mary's.  St. Mary's is a beautiful church.  When I was pastor of a small country church about 40 miles away I would take our confirmation class on a tour of the inside.  Everything in the church had an element of significance.  Even the number of steps into the sanctuary.  EVERYTHING ha

Cabin Gate 9x12

SOLD

My family has owned this property since 1856.  There is a small cabin beyond this gate that was originally a family "ess haus" at the church just down the road.  The original hand-written deed to the cabin is preserved and hanging on the wall in the cabin.  This is such a special place for our family to gather.

Papaw's Pickup 9x12

SOLD

During COVID we went to our place in the Texas Hill Country quite a bit.  This was painted during the pandemic on the back porch of our cabin.  There's an old out-of-focus pickup in the background similar to my grandfather's pickup that he passed down to me that sits on the property.  We spent lots of time together in that old pickup. It still has his stuff in the glove box
